Go directly to Bickenhill

People in Preston would ‘have more options when choosing a destination for world-wide holidays’ with #HS2, as there would be a direct connection to Birmingham Airport in just 44 minutes. That’s over an hour faster than the current quickest journey by train, announced HS2 Ltd.

(Actually, the ‘direct connection’ would be to Bickenhill HS2 station, not Birmingham airport itself. An additional journey on a ‘people mover’ or tram would be needed to reach the airport.)

twitter @HS2ltd, 'People in #Preston will have more options when choosing a destination for world-wide holidays. #HS2 will deliver a direct connection to #Birmingham Airport in just 44 minutes. That’s over an hour faster than the current quickest journey by train. #Bringingbritaincloser'

HS2 Ltd’s concern for Preston’s “holiday options” comes across as a bit random, given the city’s proximity to Manchester, Leeds Bradford, and Liverpool John Lennon airports. Birmingham Airport offers a limited range of overseas destinations, and few flights with budget airlines.

HS2 modelled service pattern - full, July 2017

Oddly enough, HS2 Ltd do not seem to be much interested in ‘providing more holiday options’ for people living anywhere on the east side of England. HS2’s eastern leg would run right past East Midlands Airport, but there would be no station there, and no train from north east England would stop at Bickenhill.
