Miffing in action
The HS2 review was the top story on the 6 pm Central ITV News (11 October 2019), for the second evening in a row.
Reporter Gareth Owen attempted to ‘catch up’ with members of the review panel, leaving its last scheduled meeting.
While none of them would give a quote about the meeting, Andy Street, the West Midlands metro mayor, appeared to be in a state of some discontent.
No Curzon Street delivers the potential for a 18-20 platform (with at least 4 x 2-train (c.400m) platforms) Birmingham Central Station, combining New Street & Snow Hill with a 400 metre link – extension of the Red Lounge (roughly below Needless Alley – yes really!) to Colmore Square, and including a new station entrance via a shop unit on Temple Row, and a review of possible use of the 1950’s nuclear-proof tunnels of the Anchor Telephone exchange (largely below New Hall Street) to provide further dispersal of station users to city centre locations, and ease the congestion & chaos on Stephenson Street.
This arrangement will enable all routes approaching from the ‘East’ to use all platforms at new combined station, and with 2 chords at Winson Green, all trains can also head West (Wolverhampton) & North (Derby & Leicester via Lichfield & Burton/Coalville as an alternative to Tamworth/Nuneaton) This diversity provides resilience, and the facility for longer blockades to reduce costs and time taken for work on tracks.
