Middle Bickenhill HS2 station should be called ‘Birmingham Airport’ (says Birmingham Airport)
Birmingham Airport is concerned about the name of the HS2 ‘Birmingham interchange’ station (which would be sited two kilometres from the airport).
[M42 ‘needs new junction’ to cope with HS2 station, Jonathan Walker, Birmingham Post, 5 Mar 2016]
[…] the airport said: “In order to create a single transport hub for HS2, Birmingham Airport also does not consider the proposed HS2 station name ‘Birmingham Interchange’ appropriate. It fails to indicate the station would serve Birmingham Airport and could wrongly indicate that it is located within Birmingham City Centre.”
Well, the trouble with calling the HS2 station ‘Birmingham Airport’ is that it would “wrongly indicate” that it was at the airport, and not in Middle Bickenhill, two kilometres away.
So far as can be established, Birmingham Airport have not offered to pay one penny towards the cost of the Middle Bickenhill station, or the £100+ million ‘people mover’ to the airport, or the ‘new M42 junction’ they say is “needed to cope with the HS2 station”.
