Boondoggles win prizes

IPPR, ‘an independent charity that specialises in providing detailed policy research and analysis’ has launched two competitions to identify infrastructure ideas for northern England.

One of the prizes, the George Stephenson Prize for Great Northern Infrastructure 2030, ‘offers industry professionals the opportunity to showcase their infrastructure concepts to the public in a different way, and to develop interest in and discussion around their plans’.

Infrastructure concepts should be at an advanced stage of development, and should consider how they answer the following questions:

1. What is the pressing economic need for this investment?

2. What is the commercial case for the investment, and does a proposal exist that could see the majority of works completed by 2030?

3. How is the proposal environmentally sustainable and/or socially transformative?

If those questions were asked of the One North proposals — such as the scheme to build a new Pennine base rail tunnel — what would be the answers?
