No go Velaro

In a further demonstration of the poor commercial prospects for high speed rail links to Europe, Eurostar (and Deutsche Bahn) Siemens Velaro trains are not being equipped with the necessary technical systems to allow them to operate into Ashford station (according to a Greengauge 21 report commissioned by the South East Local Transport Board prior to its dissolution).

[Greengauge 21, Apr 2014]

Kent County Council has commissioned technical work examining the installation of HS1-standard train control systems on the link lines from HS1 to Ashford and through the station, and this work will form an input into the industry’s infrastructure planning process.

It would seem that the Kent-to-Europe market is too limited for Eurostar to pay what must be the very small cost of upgrading the Ashford lines, even though HS1’s main tracks are just a few yards away.
