An unusual move

In an unusual move for a Japanese company, Hitachi is to move its global rail business from Japan to the United Kingdom, the BBC reported (20 March 2014). The rail unit currently employs around 2,500 of Hitachi’s 326,000 workers, mostly in Japan. What the decision means for Hitachi Rail’s factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, currently under construction, is unclear. It was originally intended to be only an assembly plant.

“Today’s announcement is a significant sign of intent by Hitachi to grow its business in the rail market,” said Alistair Dormer, chief executive of the global rail systems business.
