GBSLEP intends that HS2 would underpin its UK Central M42 Economic Gateway project to close the Meriden Gap

GBSLEP intends that Bickenhill HS2 parkway would underpin its UK Central M42 Economic Gateway project to close the Meriden Gap

The Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) is one of the undemocratic bodies created as part of the coalition’s drive to give big business more clout in planning and local governance. On 24 January 2013, the Birmingham Post reported on GBSLEP chairman Andy Street’s priorities for ‘the city’:

[“LEP chief pledges to deliver for ‘Greater Birmingham'”, Graeme Brown, 24 Jan 2014]

[…] making the most out of the proposed high speed rail line and a centre of engineering excellence linked to it, and the massive ‘UK Central’ development in the M42 corridor near Birmingham Airport.

Although billed as a project to close the West Midlands ‘output gap’, UK Central’s real purpose seems to be to close the Meriden Gap, between the West Midlands Urban Area and Coventry.
