Most journeys in the capital — like everywhere else in Britain — are short distance. So strong London population growth would indicate a need to fund improved transport in the city. With its ~£50 billion capital requirement, the HS2 project is bound to reduce funding for improvements in local transport in London and regional cities.

  1. This is a highly misleading graph on several levels. 1) Someone has clearly made the schoolboy error of confusing “radius” with “area”, thus making it seem that London has sixteen times the population of Manchester (rather than four times, which is the reality). 2) They have not compared like with like: The population of “Greater London” (in effect a colossal metropolitan county) is compared to that of the “Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester” (a fair comparison), “The Metropolitan Boroughs of the Cities of Birmingham and Sheffield”, and “The Unitary Authority of the City of Nottingham” (bonkers comparisons all). With stats like these, no wonder the project’s in trouble.
