At the Birmingham IET / Parsons Brinckerhoff / HS2 Ltd event ‘High Speed Two: Vision into Reality’ (10 Dec 2013), chief engineer Andrew McNaughton recounted that the Y network was being designed around Technical Standards for Interoperability, that were in essence of French origin.

Of course, designing new railways in Britain around inappropriate, outmoded, and irrelevant French technical standards makes no sense. But that is what HS2 Ltd are seeking to do.
